Bishop Enock Tombe, leader of the Faith Based Organizations at the Ethiopia peace talks, briefed the South Sudan/Sudan Council of Churches on the progress and failures of the negotiations.

He said that real issues were discussed this time but the 45 days dateline was not observed.

“It has not been easy when you are talking of power sharing because the constitution said the president is both the president and the head of the state and government,” he said. “And also in the protocol said there should be an office for the prime minister and the power should be negotiated.”

Enock said delegates of both government and the opposition failed to discuss these issues, noting that without passing these points they cannot move to other issues, including security sector arrangement.

He said it is only Kiir and Machar to decide if they would like to work together.

“We have so many armies now, how are they going to create a national army now?” he asked. “At the moment we have tribal army, there is no national army, that why there is fight in Juba.

Talks are expected to resume on 16 October.
