Local farmers in Bor town in South Sudan’s Jonglei State said they have been counting losses after an invasion of birds.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Thursday, several farmers complained about swamps of birds in the area amid fear that this will affect this year’s farming season.
Atong Ajak, an old woman guarding her farm, said the number of birds infesting their crops is worrying compared to last year.
However, she expressed optimism that they will have a promising harvest although birds are trying to destroy sorghum crops.
Abuol Nyok, another farmer in the area, said they have been struggling with birds that come to their agricultural fields from around 6:00 am daily, prompting them to guard their farms during the day.
Atem Gak Atem, director general of the state ministry of agriculture, said they don’t have pesticides to destroy breeding places of birds but advised the local farmers to discourage the birds by using manual scaring methods.
