Bieh State MPs elect a new speaker

Lawmakers in South Sudan’s Bieh State assembly on Friday elected Honorable James Mayul Thor as the new speaker.

Lawmakers in South Sudan’s Bieh State assembly on Friday elected Honorable James Mayul Thor as the new speaker.

Mayul succeeds Isaac Kuach Duoth who was controversially impeached last Wednesday for alleged misconduct and absenteeism.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Monday, Peter Mabor Bol, the assembly’s acting head of the information committee said Mayul was elected by 16 state lawmakers, a number more than the 2/3 majority required by law.

The state lawmaker further pointed out that Honorable Mayul will run the assembly until further elections are held.

The state lawmakers accused Kuach of leaving his post vacant for more than six months.

However, Kuach told Radio Tamazuj last week, he was seeking medical attention in Juba and that his impeachment was non-procedural and politically-motivated.
