Bentiu woman commits suicide after being diagnosed with cancer

A 40-year-old woman diagnosed with cancer has committed suicide in Sector 4, Block9, at the Bentiu IDP camp of Unity State on Sunday a day after learning of her condition.

The woman hanged herself at the camp after she had gone for treatment.

The camp Community High Committee (CHC) Chairman, William Jal Kuong, confirmed the incident to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday morning, adding that the deceased had tested positive for cancer.

She was identified as Nyaket Lual Gatkek from Mayom County.

Kuong disclosed that the cancer status was confirmed at the MSF Bentiu IDP camp hospital.

He said family members had taken the deceased for medical treatment at the MSF hospital two months earlier and she was discharged on Saturday morning.

Suicide is a criminal offence in South Sudan, per the Penal Code Act 2008, Section 215. The punishment for this can include imprisonment for up to a year, a fine, or both.
