Police authorities have reported the arrest of a woman who killed her baby in the Bentiu IDP camp of Unity State last Friday.
The incident was reported to have happened in the camp’s Sector Five for unknown reasons.
Deputy Camp Commander David Matut Both confirmed the arrest of the woman to Radio Tamazuj, saying the deceased was a newborn.
Both said the reason for the killing of the baby were yet to be established.
“We arrested her after we were informed about the incident by the community members,” Both said, adding that the woman was sent to the Bentiu police headquarters, according to a directive from the local police commissioner.
He said the investigations by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) into the matter had started.
Bentiu civil society activist Riek Koang described the incident as unfortunate and condemned the young mother for killing her baby.
Koang said there was a need for psychosocial health support to the people who seemed to be grappling with mental challenges in Unity State since the conflict in 2013.
