Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir yesterday vowed to provide assurances that leaders of armed movements can participate in the National Dialogue process, an official from his office said.
State Minister at the Presidency El Rashid Haroun said that during a Tuesday meeting in Khartoum, al-Bashir told Thabo Mbeki, the chief mediator between Khartoum and rebel groups, that armed movements will be able to participate in the National Dialogue.
Haroun said Mbeki’s African Union (AU) mediation team presented proposals to the government. He said the government will study the proposals and reply, but did not provide further details.
In a press statement after his meeting with al-Bashir, Mbeki said they discussed issues pertaining to the National Dialogue so that AU mediators can compile a report that will be tabled at an AU summit.
Mbeki said they also discussed the AU’s involvement in peace talks in Addis Ababa between the government and SPLA-North rebels.
