Majid Yak Kur, the deputy chairperson of the Abyei Area Administration Committee (AAAC), said that the committee received directives from the Sudan Presidency to go to Abyei and inspect what is taking place there.
This committee was formed last year and is led by Ahmed Hassan Al-Immam who is representing the Sudanese government. Speaking to the Sudan News Agency recently, Al-Immam said the move came after South Sudan unilaterally formed the Abyei civil administration without Sudan’s participation.
The Abyei Administration formed by the latter is headed by Reng Deng Kual and includes departments of local government, finance and economic development, service and social affairs, agriculture and infrastructure.
Al-Immam however rejected the move by South Sudan and accused South Sudan of abrogating the deal reached recently in talks by Sudan and South Sudan in Addis Abbaba.
Talks between the two differing states are scheduled to resume by the end of August. The Mbeki-led mediation has not publically reacted so far to this development.
