The union of workers at the University of Bahr el Ghazal has urged South Sudan’s government to release salary arrears of civil servants.

Civil servants have reportedly not been paid for the last six months.

Bol Maker, the deputy head of the workers’ union at the University of Bahr el Ghazal, said civil servants have been living in very appalling conditions ever since coronavirus broke out.

Mario Lino Ambiliko, a university staff, wondered what would happen to their children if they are unpaid for much longer periods.

“All the civil servants are widely relying on the government and they should not forget to release their salaries,” he explained.

Article 10 of the Civil Servants Act says all civil servants in the country shall be entitled to salaries for their work.
