The Jonglei State government on Tuesday launched a Back-to-Learning campaign in the state capital, Bor.

The state education minister, Gabriel Deng Ajak, while addressing the gathering during the launching ceremony, said the event was necessary to increase enrollment, emphasizing the importance of education in the country’s development.

“Education is very important in our lives. Without education, you will not have doctors in hospitals. Without education, you will not have those engineers constructing our roads,” he stressed, adding. “So, education is the only tool that transforms human life.”

Minister Deng urged parents to have their children, including females, enrolled in school, saying education is the only beacon of hope for the country’s social, economic, and political development.

Meanwhile, William Kuol Chol, the state gender and social welfare minister, appealed for support for education in the state.

“We went to the bush and fought for the right of our children to go to school so that is why we have our nation,” he said. “We attained our nation and congratulated ourselves because we struggled for the future of our country. So, we need to bring up these young children.”

On his part, Michael Martin, a UNICEF representative, said the UN agency is committed to supporting the government’s Back-to-Learning program and called on parents to promote girl education.
