A baby girl drowned in floodwaters in Duk County of Jonglei State on Saturday, local authorities have reported.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Monday, Elijah Manyok, the acting county commissioner, said the baby drowned after collapsing while playing with her siblings at her home in Duk Padiet town on Saturday.

“While she was playing outside with the rest of her siblings, she suddenly fell on the other side of the dyke surrounding the house and then drowned before she could be rescued,” he explained.

Manyok identified the deceased as one-year-old Nyankiir Rial and blamed her death on the level of rising floodwaters.

Floods have displaced many people, destroyed property, and claimed several lives across the country.
