Residents of Babnusa town in Sudan’s West Kordofan State have complained about skyrocketing prices of essential items in the town with the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, and is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting to commemorate the first revelation of the Quran to Muhammad according to Islamic belief.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday, a local resident said a 10kg sack of sugar is being sold at 40 SDG, 1kg of lentils costs 30 SDG, while 1 pound of cooking oil has reached 20 SDG.

He added that 1kg of powder milk is now 90 SDG, 1 pound of tea leaves is 60 SDG, and 30kg sack of sorghum costs 550 SDG, while that of wheat is sold at 650 SDG.

The resident also said that the price of bread has remained constant at 1 SDG but its weight has been reduced significantly.
