Babanusa citizens lift strike until February

A 32 day sit-in held by citizens in Babanusa, South Kordofan ended this week, according to a member of the area’s youth committee.

Hassan Hamed told Radio Tamazuj yesterday that the sit-in had achieved almost 80% of the residents’ demands including increased access to basic services, electricity and water as well as road improvements.

The strikers have allowed the state government one month to implement the agreement.

Hamed claims, “A one month deadline is sufficient for the authorities to meet our demands.  In case of failure to meet these demands, we will resume the strike in the first week of February.”

In addition to striking an agreement, the Youth Committee member emphasized that the citizens of Babanusa have also fostered a stronger sense of solidarity and self-interest.
