The commissioner for Lake State’s Awerial County has urged women and youth not to misuse their limited resources to buy new clothes for Christmas festivities and New Year celebrations.

Philip Mawut Garang told Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday that the country is facing economic challenges and that there is a need for frugal expenditure of available resources.

“During this Christmas celebrations, my message is going to women and young people not to waste their resources for buying new dresses and be left with nothing to eat,” he counseled. “You can wash your old dress and go to Church because God does not call his children based on the smartest but on how you repent. People are facing hunger because floods destroyed crops, so, they should use available money carefully.”

Commissioner Mawut emphasized that instead of spending money on new clothes people should focus on ensuring their families have enough to eat.

His call comes after large swaths of the county, including farms, were flooded, leading to food shortages and economic distress for local farmers, with so many families already facing hunger.

Mawut concluded his message by sending the people of Awerial festive season greetings and wishes and encouraged them to focus on the blessings they still have, rather than the material challenges they face.
