The local government in Lakes State’s Awerial County has urged youth leaders to play a crucial role in the ongoing fight against the consumption of harmful alcohol within the county.
Commissioner Philip Mawut Garang made the call while delivering his Christmas message and appealed to local leaders to help enforce the ban on harmful alcohol
directed by the state government.
The state government highlighted the alarming connection between alcohol consumption and rising crime rates, particularly incidents leading to loss of life in villages and cattle camps.
“Consumption of harmful alcohol is directly linked to the rising incidents of violence and death in our communities,” he stated. “As leaders of the youth, your involvement in enforcing the ban is crucial. We cannot afford to allow alcohol to continue ruining the lives of our people.”
The commissioner underscored the potential of youth leaders to drive positive change and urged them to work closely with local authorities in curbing the spread of harmful substances to ensure a safer and healthier environment for all residents of Awerial County.
Commissioner Mawut called for collective action to protect the community and appealed to everyone to prioritize peace, safety, and good health.
The crackdown on harmful alcohol comes at a time when many communities are grappling with the effects of social issues related to substance abuse. The state’s intervention aims to curb these problems and restore peace and order across the state.
For his part, the Chairperson of the Bolook Youth in Awerial County, Alfred Awuok Mading, pledged his full support to the county government in the ongoing battle against the use and consumption of illicit alcohol.
“As youth leaders, we have a responsibility to protect our communities from the destructive effects of alcohol,” he said. “I stand with the county government in this fight, and I am committed to working closely with local authorities to ensure that the ban on alcohol is effectively enforced.”
Awuok acknowledged the significant role that youth play in shaping the future of the county and emphasized that the involvement of young people is crucial in tackling social issues like alcohol abuse.
