A youth activist in South Sudan’s Aweil State has encouraged groups of gangs to embark on agriculture and refrain from criminal activities committed by their various networks.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Friday, John Garang Kenyang, a member of Maper Akot youth association, said the youth should denounce crimes by involving themselves in agricultural work to produce enough food.
“We are in the agricultural season and as a youth activist, I encourage all the youth to be ready for the cultivation season because idleness is not helping us. I am telling boys and even the girls to know that this is the time for agriculture,” said Kenyang.
During his tour of the Greater Bahr el Ghazal region last month, President Salva Kiir warned local gangs operating in Aweil to stop their involvement in criminal activities or else face serious measures.
The gangs have often been accused of committing crimes in the state.
