The legislative assembly in South Sudan’s Aweil State has nullified the social household tax initiated by the ministry of local government and law enforcement agency, early this year.
The ministry had, earlier this year, ordered all county commissioners to immediately begin the collection of household taxes from citizens.
The chairperson of the parliamentary committee for legal affairs, Kon Deng Chan, told Radio Tamazuj Friday that lawmakers summoned the local government minister and directed him to stop the ongoing collection of the social household tax from citizens who are facing a lot of challenges.
“We heard that the minister ordered county commissioners to collect the household tax and we don’t have any information. That’s why we summoned him to explain to us,” he explained.
Kon said lawmakers would not allow the collection of household taxes to continue, until the law is passed by the state parliament.
