Legislators in South Sudan’s Aweil state assembly should enact a child protection law that will help address the challenges street children are facing, an official said on Tuesday.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, the state minister for social development, Ayak Zachariah Ngor said absence of the law makes it hard for her ministry to take actions on parents who neglect children.

She urged Aweil state legislative assembly to immediately establish a child protection law to resolve issues affecting homeless children.

The speaker of the state assembly, Deng Ayom Ayom said they are committed to pass the law to help children with especial needs.

The assembly awaits the ministry’s proposal for approval, he added.
