Five young women were arrested in Malek Alel town on Sunday in Aweil South County of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State after they fought each other while drunk, police authorities said.

The Aweil South County police inspector, Brigadier General Mabior Deng Deng, said they detained the women who were involved in a drunken affray on Sunday evening and disclosed that they were going to be arraigned in court on Monday.

“We arrested the five drunken women yesterday (Sunday) evening because they fought. So they were taken to the court today (Monday),” Gen.Deng said.

The Buonchuai community leader, Piol Geng Ariath, said the Tiar Aliet Peace Conference which was held from 21-22 December 2021 recommended that local authorities impose a ban on some types of alcohol that may be dangerous for human consumption.

“We already ruled in the Tiar Aliet Conference that some dangerous alcohols must be banned,” Geng said.

County Commissioner Luka Thel Thel said that he banned the drinks last year with support from the state government but that instructions from the national government in Juba reversed the local order.

“You know, I and the governor outlawed the Star Gin and we implemented the ban but some orders which came from Juba reinstated the consumption of the drinks,” Commissioner Thel said. “The issue of alcohol has become the only problem in the county and the government shall work hard to stop it because people, including youth and women, drink and fight at all local markets.”
