A rice scheme in South Sudan’s Aweil State is set to cultivate about 10,050 hectares this season, a top official said.
Aweil rice scheme manager, Madut Deng Gei told Radio Tamazuj Monday that the agricultural season at the site started last week and they intend to cover over 10,000 hectares of land, despite difficulties.
“In the 2019 agricultural season, we will cultivate 10,050 hectares, but we have challenges because the tractors we have are not in good condition. There are no essential spare parts and fuel,” he said.
Madut stressed that despite the commitment, failure to get support from the government and its partners will affect work at the scheme.
He said last year’s production was poor, but gave no further details.
Madut has appealed to the country’s agriculture ministry to provide the scheme with diesel, gasoline and spare parts to boost their work.
