Police authorities in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State reported the arrest of four individuals for various crimes during the Christmas celebrations. Investigations are underway to determine the motives behind these criminal acts.

Northern Bahr el Ghazal State Police Commissioner Major General Philip Madut Tong confirmed the arrest of a driver involved in a fatal pedestrian accident in Aweil Center County’s Barmayen payam. Additionally, two burglars accused of stealing six cows in Aweil West County were apprehended in Aweil town on December 26 and are currently undergoing interrogation.

Major General Tong explained, “Yesterday (Wednesday), a driver knocked a pedestrian dead in Barmayen Payam. It was a market day, and two locals were chasing each other. One of them, Deng Akuar Mawein, was crushed by a vehicle, and the driver is now under investigation.”

He further stated, “On December 26, two robbers stole six cows in Aweil West County and were arrested while transporting the cows to Aweil town.”

A police source in Aweil town also revealed the detention of a young woman, Abuk Akot Dumo, who attempted suicide in Nyanlath, Aweil Center County. The source disclosed that the 19-year-old made the decision to end her life after finding her husband in the company of another girl at a local party.

The source stated, “One woman identified as Abuk Akot Dumo, 19, attempted suicide in the Nyanlath area. She took a scarf and tied it around her neck, but she has been rescued and is currently in custody. She accused her husband of developing affection for a certain girl because she found him chatting with the lady at a drum place.”

Highlighting the legal implications, the source emphasized, “This is a clear crime because Article 215 of the South Sudan Penal Code 2008 explains that if someone attempts suicide and is rescued, he/she must be jailed for a period of 5 years, but considerations are made depending on the conditions of the offender.”
