The Northern Bahr el Ghazal state government has denied claims that Garang Malong Awan was appointed as the new state minister of youth and sports because his father is state SPLM party chairman Paul Malong.
State information minister Angelo Akech, who is also SPLM information secretary, told Radio Tamazuj that although 31 year old Garang has never such a position before, he was appointed based on his activities in the SPLM party.
Garang’s father Paul Malong is the former governor of Northern Bahr el Ghazal, but he retains his position as head of the state ruling party despite being appointed as army chief of staff last year.
The younger Malong is one of 14 ministers recently appointed by caretaker governor Akot Deng Akot. The ministers are still waiting to be sworn in by the caretaker governor.
