Municipality authorities in Aweil town in South Sudan’s Aweil State said large quantities of expired goods were seized from local traders after being reviewed by public health department officials.
The deputy mayor, Sadig Idris Isaac told Radio Tamazuj Friday that a big store has, in the last few months, been filled with outdated items.
He said different food and non-food commodities were collected during the exercise and their owners fined for selling unwanted items.
“We fine a trader with expired goods so that he does not do it again. If a trader has a large quantity of expired goods, he will be asked to pay 5,000 SSP, but if he has small quantity, we will take 1,000 SSP or 2,000 SSP,” said Sadig.
No trader was arrested during the exercise, according to the deputy mayor.
Sadig did not disclose the value of expired goods seized, but said a disposal committee would be formed soon to burn them.
