Members of the Aweil state legislative assembly were unable to disseminate the revitalised peace agreement due to lack of funds, a lawmaker said.
Kon Deng, head of the parliamentary committee for legal affairs, told Radio Tamazuj Tuesday that lawmakers were supposed to spend their recess period preaching peace, but lacked funds to facilitate the process.
“We tried our level best so that MPs can circulate the peace agreement and its detailed principles to grass root communities. But that would not happen because no funds were allocated,” said Deng.
The legislator, however, urged the state government to consider issues affecting the citizens and take action to address them wisely.
The state assembly closed for a three-month recess to allow lawmakers to disseminate the peace deal to grass root communities.
In September last year, South Sudanese President Salva Kiir and several opposition leaders, including Riek Machar, signed a power-sharing deal promising an end to the conflict.
South Sudan parties are now facing a time crunch and funds, as the deal provides for a new government to assume power in May 2019.
