Tong Simon, Aweil town mayor in South Sudan’s Northern Bahr el Ghazal State said they decided to jail and fine street children found loitering in the town in an attempt to curb criminal activities being committed by members of gangs known locally as “niggers”.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj Thursday, the municipal official said the authorities applied tough measures to fight criminal groups in Aweil town. He revealed that about 17 street children including two girls were sentenced to two years imprisonment in Aweil town.
The local official pointed out that any street child will be put in jail if he fails to pay a fine, while warning homeless boys against joining the so-called ‘niggers’ groups that he said are causing instability in the area.
