The governor of South Sudan’s Aweil state has announced a security plan to implement the state of emergency declared by President in the area, saying it is part of precautionary measures to stop smuggling of weapons.

President Salva Kiir recently issued an order declaring a three-month state of emergency in four states but Aweil state, although it is bordering Gogrial and Wau, two states covered by the order was not included in the measure.

Kiir’s order covered Gogrial, some parts of Tonj, Wau and Aweil East states, most of which experienced communal violence recently except Aweil East whose most of its parts experienced peace.

Governor Yournew Wol Kuot told Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday that he has been trying to unite various community leaders and enlighten security organs in the state to be prepared to handle the situation.

“Aweil state is not in the state of emergency order but we feel it is important the people and the security organs are enlightened so that they are put in picture and prepare to handle the situation,” said Yournew.

The top state official called for cooperation between the security and members of the general public, pointing to importance of information sharing whenever there are unusual activities in the area.
