Ronald Ruay Deng, governor of Aweil state in South Sudan has said repairing internal roads linking states in the region will boost trade.

Ronald Ruay Deng, governor of Aweil state in South Sudan has said repairing internal roads linking states in the region will boost trade.

Aweil state is one of the successor states from former Northern Bahr el Ghazal which was split into three separate states as a result of presidential establishment order. It shares direct boundaries with other four states. It borders Aweil East to the north part, Lol state in the North –West, Gograil state in the East and Wau state in the South. The state experiences many challenges in trade when goods get finished and with difficulties in receiving new commodities to refill stocks due to poor road connections.

Governor Ruay while commenting on the status of the road last week, said, there is a plan from state government and National Ministry of Roads and Bridges to rehabilitate Aweil-Wau main road as it will enable movement goods in the area.

“As a land lock state, we solely depend on good road networks so as to supply our markets as well as export of our raw materials. We are working closely with National ministry of Roads and Bridges to rehabilitate our main Aweil-Wau road, so as to enable our traders to access bigger markets in Juba and beyond,” Ruay said. He also added that his government will advocate for the construction of new feeder roads in the newly created counties and to reach agriculture production sites across the state.

“The state government will continue to advocate for support to development new feeder roads to our newly established counties and to reach agriculture productive areas, yes it is priority of our government,” he adds.
Last month, the Aweil Town Mayor, Simon Tong Deng disclosed shortage of food commodities as result of reckless roads. Tong explained that markets in the state are supplied with few goods from neighboring country, Sudan.
