Police authorities in Aweil East County in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State have arrested a man who killed his mother during a family row in Akoong Payam last Sunday.
The Aweil East County deputy police inspector, Lt. Colonel Deng Chier, told Radio Tamazuj Wednesday that the accused wanted to sell the family’s only cow. His mother objected and hit her with a club, killing her instantly.
“The woman killed by her son in the Akoong area is called Adut Dut, 45 years old, and her son is Duang Tong Thiek. The reason for the murder was that the son sold two of the family’s cows last year and left for Sudan. He came back two weeks ago and tried to sell the only remaining cow together with its calf, but the mother refused to release the cow,” Lt. Col. Chier explained.
He added: “And from there he accused his mum of gossiping about him. The mother responded that she never gossiped about him and while she was leaving the house, the son hit her with a club and she fell and died immediately. The suspect is currently arrested and in our custody.’’
The Aweil East County commissioner, Kiir Yor Lual, confirmed the killing and the detention of the accused and said the suspect will be arraigned in court as soon.
“I was given a report of domestic violence between a son and a mother which resulted in the unfortunate killing of the mother. The culprit was arrested and is in police custody and will be referred to the court as soon as possible,” Commissioner Yor said.
