A sharp increase in pneumonia and Diarrhea infections has been reported at Malualkon Hospital in Aweil East County, Northern Bahr el Ghazal State.

The management of the facility said high incidents of pneumonia and diarrhea among children have been registered since the start of the winter season.

Dr. Machar Machar, the Director of Malualkon Hospital told Radio Tamazuj last week that the cases were common among children under five years.

Dr. Machar said the facility receives between 10-12 children with Pneumonia and diarrhea cases on a daily basis.

“This winter season, we are witnessing the increase in the cases of pneumonia and diarrhea and we are admitting at least children under 5-year-old because their immune is very weak than adult when they face winds plus polluted environments, such cases emerge yearly in the months of November, December and January,” said Machar.

Adding, “Antibiotic and anti-diarrhea medications are available in less quantities and we use them for emergency cases because medical supplies run out within one and half months until we receive the next consignment from the partners and the government”.

Gabriel Angony, the Aweil East County Health Director, appealed for health partners’ intervention in delivery of medical supplies and support to medical workers in the county.

“Yes, the cases are not at Malualkon Hospital alone but in all health facilities in the region because the winter season comes with such cases and we want sufficient medical stocks and additional nurses and doctors,” said Angony.
