Aweil East governor meets first vice president

Deng Deng Akuei, governor the newly created Aweil East has met and held a meeting with the first vice president, Taban Deng Gai. It was not immediately clear what the two leaders have discussed but gubernatorial aides and those with direct knowledge of the circumstances under which the meeting was convened, claimed it focused on how the local level government through states, could work together to help the transitional government of national unity implement the peace agreement. Other sources claimed the meeting may have touched on the criteria of selection of members of Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition faction under Taban Deng Gai, who would participate in the government of Aweil East state. The state is one of the states in the country which reserved a cabinet position to be fulfilled by a nominee of the SPLM-IO in fulfillment of the power sharing percentage in the agreement, which allocates 15% of representation in each of the states in Equatoria and Bahr el Ghazal regions. Since the formation of Aweil East state cabinet earlier this year, governor Deng has left vacant the position of the minister of health. Many speculate the post may have been reserved for SPLM-IO
