The clearence of five airstrips to boost WFP airdrops in Aweil East state is nearly complete, according to the Minister of Information Ayuel Yai.
Yai urged locals to speed up clearing so food drop rations can go quickly.
“I saw WFP staff and local authorities putting up things in the airstrip. I hope soon the airdrops will kick off. This will rescue people from hunger situation and high prices of food commodities” said Yai.
The World Food Programme began airdropping food for four hundred thousand in Northern Bahr El Ghazal earlier this month, prioritizing Aweil town population according to the minister.
The information minister added that recent floods have affected the population, meaning they are in dire need of humanitarian assistance. He called WFP to do registration as quick as possible so humanitarian agencies can respond to needs.
