Aweil crops devastated by flooding and drought

Half of Aweil State’s harvest has been affected bad weather conditions, a local official told Radio Tamazuj.

Crop yields in Aweil State this year have been adversely affected by drought and floods, according to the Aweil State Minister of Information, Youth, and Sports James Wieu. Some parts of Aweil and Northern Bhar el Ghazal are suffering from catastrophic food shortages, according to UN agencies.

Last year, there was a severe drought in the Aweil region. This year, Wieu said longer drought spells experienced between May and June caused destruction of crops in some areas, but in particularly low lying areas river and flood rains destroyed crops.

“The flood has destroyed harvest and some crops now could not wait due to lack or too much of water that has destroyed the agriculture,” said Wieu.

He called on local traders to lower their prices so that citizens could buy food commodities at affordable prices
