South Sudan’s Aweil State citizens have complained over the high fares imposed on public transport means.
A survey conducted by Radio Tamazuj Thursday shows that one person has to pay between 250-300 SSP to travel from Aweil town via Aweil South to Warawar, while a road trip from Aweil town to Arroyo costs 500 SSP.
Also, traveling from Aweil town to Nyamlell now costs 600 SSP and 800 SSP is levied from Aweil town via Marial Baai to Gok Machar.
Arop Ngor, a passenger, said there is need to review the new tariffs.
Simon Peter, on the other hand, said it has become extremely difficult for them to travel freely due to high public transport fares.
He appealed to the drivers’ association to reduce transport tariffs to enable every citizen move from place to another.
The drivers’ association chairman, Akol Deng Akol justified the high tariffs, citing high costs of fuel, spare parts and poor road network.
A jerrican of fuel, according to Akol, currently costs up to 4,500 SSP.
He called for patience, saying the situation would normalize once the peace agreement is implemented.
