The local authorities in Aweil Center County in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, the state government, the community, and the UNMISS over the weekend held a ceremony to inaugurate a new police station in Barmayen Payam built by UN Mission.

Aweil Center County Commissioner Peter Natale told Radio Tamazuj on Saturday that representatives from the Northern Bahr el Ghazal State government, developmental and peace graced the function.

“On Friday we opened the Barmayen Police Station which was funded by UNMISS and the celebration was attended by the UNMISS head of field office in Aweil, the acting governor, information minister, minister of physical infrastructure and the local citizens were happy for the support from the UN Mission,” he said.

According to the commissioner, the new police station has four different detention cells for men, women, and juvenile girls and boys.

Meanwhile, Aweil Center County Police Inspector Brigadier General George Awath Wol commended the UN Police of UNMISS for erecting the structure.

“The police station was constructed with funds from the United Nations Police (UNPOL) but we handed over a request for the provision of water because it is located in a place that is far from a water source,” he said.

For her part, Treza Achol Bilwan, who represents the Aweil Center County Women in the Northern Bahr el Ghazal State Parliament, welcomed the construction of the police station and said it will benefit the community and help mitigate conflict in the area.

“Barmayen has a lot of problems and I urge the Northern Bahr el Ghazal State police commissioner to deploy additional police forces,” she said. “The inauguration of the new police station is good because if there is a problem, the police on the ground will contain the situation rather than waiting for police officers and personnel from the state headquarters in Aweil to address the challenge.”
