Authorities warn of looming hunger in parts of Abyei

A government official in the disputed Abyei region’s Rumamer County is warning of looming hunger in the region in the coming months precipitated by famine.

Rumamer County commissioner Mayot Kwin De Mayen told Radio Tamazuj on Sunday that the region experienced crop failure this season, worsening the living conditions of the people.

De Mayen attributed the risk of famine to crop destruction owing to unexpected heavy rains.

He appealed to aid organizations operating in the region to provide food aid to the communities whom he claims are already in dire need of assistance.
