An activist has urged authorities in Western Bahr el Ghazal State to relocate Wau Central Prison from town to avoid further loss of lives when inmates escape.
At least two prisoners and two security officers were killed in clashes at Wau Central Prison on Monday, causing fear among civilians. The incident in the town of Wau occurred when prison warders tried to stop a mass prison break.
Police said 15 prisoners had been recaptured while 10 others managed to escape and remain at large.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Thursday, Stephen Robo, the state coordinator for Community Empowerment for Progress Organisation (CEPO), demanded that the prison be moved to a new location outside Wau town to minimize loss of lives when inmates escape.
The civil society activist said prison administrators should be summoned to appear in court after inmates escaped from the facility.
This is the third time prisoners have escaped from Wau Central Prison.
Robo urged the relevant authorities to form a committee to investigate circumstances under which the inmates escaped from jail.
Authorities in Western Bahr el Ghazal could not immediately be reached for comment.
