Authorities try to impose price controls in Warrap

The mayor of Tonj South in Warrap State on Thursday ordered traders and the entire community to reduce prices of local commodities including meat, okra, potatoes and short poles.

Catholic Radio Network reports that Marko Mabior Ajiec “commanded” that one kilo of meat must be reduced from 20 to 18 South Sudanese Pounds because cows are not imported from the neighbouring countries.

He discouraged selling of local commodities at high prices, calling on communities to report to the office those who continue selling at high prices.

Apparently he also disclosed plans to reduce “all prices” soon, including those of imported goods, but for now has targeted only locally produced products.

The mayor appealed to sellers to respect the laws and regulations, warning that police will arrest and jail violators for three months.
