The defense lawyer of striking teachers in Bor town in South Sudan’s Jonglei State has been released after being arrested for six hours by police authorities when his clients failed to pay bail on Monday.
Last week, Jonglei’s High Court issued a decision sentencing 23 striking teachers to one month imprisonment and fined each an amount of 1,000 SSP.
Following the court ruling, Defense Lawyer Mayen Maker appealed for the release of his clients on bail of 16,000 SSP, but he couldn’t collected the required money on time which led to his arrest.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj today, Mayen said that the high court judge who ordered for his arrest went to the prison at night and asked the police to release him.
“The judge came around 9:00 pm, and told the police officers that Mayen should be released, and in the morning after my release, I went to the court to meet the judge, but I was told that he travelled to Juba,” he said.
Mayen pointed out that his clients managed to pay an amount of 16,000 SSP to the court on Monday.
