Police authorities in Cueibet County of South Sudan’s Lakes State confirmed the arrest of two suspects accused of killing women in intercommunal clashes that left more than 10 people dead.

Seven women were killed in clashes between the Pagok and Ayiel sections of the Gok community in Agangrial village of Cueibet County over cattle raids last month.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, Cueibet's police acting commissioner Machar Muorwel Madol said that the suspects have been apprehended and are kept at Rumbek's main prison for investigations.

Madol noted that initial investigations suggest that one other suspect died during the fighting. But, he assured that the police are still pursuing more suspects to be held accountable.

The newly appointed secretary-general of the defunct Gok State, Zechariah Mamer Thokgor confirmed the arrest of Meen Machok and Buong Mayom.

"We have managed to arrest two suspects who killed women from both sides between Pagok and Ayiel section," said Mamer Thokgor.

He said, since the arrested suspects, there is freedom of movement of women without fear in the area.

Besides, Mamer said two people identified as Mapet Akec and Akot Arop Awan were killed and a chief, Makuor Awar,  was wounded during a revenge attack in the county.
