The African Union (AU), in a press statement issued yesterday, welcomed the outcomes of recent negotiations between South Sudan and Sudan in Addis Ababa under their mediation.

The talks concluded under the agreement that their relations are to be monitored to ensure that they fulfil responsibilities as outlined in recent cooperation agreements.

The AU mediators praised the two negotiating teams who to opted to establish a mechanism for the monitoring and evaluation of agreement’s implementation and the resolution of any further disputes.

The African Union also paid tribute to the continued progress made in enabling both parties to live together in peace and progress.

In March, South Sudan and Sudan began to implement a cooperation agreement signed last September. This resulted in the agreement to resume oil production as well as the opening of their shared border this week to better facilitate trade and movement.
