The African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki has appointed three prominent African personalities as members of the AU High-level Panel on Sudan.
In a statement issued on Wednesday and seen by Radio Tamazuj, Moussa Faki said the members of the AU High-Level Panel will work with all the Sudanese stakeholders to ” ensure an all-inclusive process towards the swift restoration of peace, constitutional order and stability” in Sudan.
The Panel on Sudan will be headed by top Ghanaian diplomat Mr Mohamed Ibn Chambas. Former Ugandan vice president Ms Speciosa Wandira-Kazibwe and Mr Francisco Madeira, a Mozambican diplomat are members.
“The appointment, will take effect immediately and is in line with the conclusion of the AU Peace and Security Council through communique PSC/MIN/COMM. 1185 (2023) and in furtherance of the AU’s mandate and determination to entrench peace and stability on the Continent,” the statement read in part.
The AU Commission Chairperson called on all Sudanese stakeholders and the international community to extend the necessary cooperation and support to the Panel members towards a successful execution of their mandate.
The war between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) erupted on 15 April 2023 over a plan to merge the RSF into the army and launch a transition towards elections.
The conflict has killed more than 13,000 people, according to a conservative estimate by the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project.
Around 7.5 million civilians have fled the fighting either abroad or to other parts of the country, according to United Nations figures.
