The African Union Commission of Inquiry has set a work plan including visits to victims, refugees, civil society and internally displaced persons (IDPs) in South Sudan.

Members of the panel expect to first travel to South Sudan by the end of this month. They will also meet with Ethiopian Prime Hailemariam Dessalegn and other regional leaders.

“The Commission also commenced its engagement with stakeholders and gathering of information that will inform its work,” the commission stated in a press release.

According to the statement, the commission has met with commanders of the Ethiopian military who served in peacekeeping missions in South Sudan and Abyei, as well as political officers of UNMISS and AUHIP.

The African Union panel is headed by former President Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria. The AU launched the commission in early March in order to investigate human rights violations committed during the events of mid-December 2013 in South Sudan.
