Attack on boat leaves 10 dead near Juba

Parliamentarians from Unity State on Thursday said at least ten people were killed when bandits attacked a boat traveling from Juba to the Port of Adok in Unity State.

Parliamentarians from Unity State on Thursday said at least ten people were killed when bandits attacked a boat traveling from Juba to the Port of Adok in Unity State.  

While addressing a press conference in Juba, Badit Dak Wieh, the deputy chairperson of the specialized committee for mining in the Transitional National Legislative Assembly, said the attack happened on Wednesday at around 4 pm between Juba and Mangala when a boat carrying commodities to Adok Port was attacked by bandits killing 10 people. He said one person survived the attack.

 “The Boat started to move from Gabat in Juba at around 2 pm and got stuck in shallow waters near Gondokoro and those criminals came and asked those on the boat for assistance and were given money and some of the goods on the boat,” he said. “The criminals then returned after about 15 minutes and started shooting the passengers on the boat. Out of 11 people, only one survived.”

He revealed that the lone survivor was transported to Juba and is helping the SSPDF’s Directorate of Military Intelligence with investigations.

On his part, Malek Cook Dwach, the chairperson of the specialized committee on federal affairs in the national parliament condemned the attack and called on the government and security agencies to provide security for people and their properties.

“We condemn this barbaric act in the strongest terms possible and we urge the government to protect the lives and properties of the civilians,” he said.
