Chukudum town in Budi County of Eastern Equatoria State is reported be calm again after violence earlier this week in which at least three people were killed.

Radio Tamazuj has been unable to confirm the circumstances in which the victims died, with some reports saying there was a gunfight between SPLA-Juba faction soldiers and locals and another source alleging that some of those killed were unarmed civilians.

Clement Laku Chichim, the State Minister of Information, was quoted by Radio Miraya as saying about three people were killed on Tuesday after soldiers exchanged gunfire with a group of armed persons in the town of Chukudum.

Other reports suggest dozens of huts were burned and civilians fled to the bush. The state minister said the soldiers were subsequently ordered to return to their base at Camp 15.

Two reports including one by the Catholic Radio Network cite the death of a Chukudum resident in government custody, a primary school teacher, as the initial trigger for the violence, after his arrest without charge.
