Stray bullets shot by security personnel celebrating the New Year wounded at least six people who sought treatment at Juba Teaching Hospital.

Central Equatoria State Police Commissioner Henry Danima says that special emergency courts will be set up in Juba to try security personnel for ‘misconduct’ and ‘disturbing the public peace’ after some of them shot randomly into the air on New Year’s Eve.

According to the director of Accident and Emergency at Juba Teaching Hospital, Dr Abraham Adut, two women and four men were admitted after being hit by stray bullets.

He told the UN radio service that the wounds are not serious but some bullets needed to be removed from the patients.

“For those whose bullets have been removed I need to review them today of developing any complication. So I guess by tomorrow I will just discharge them because their status is going to be ok,” he said, noting also that some cases were already sent home.
