Persons living with disability PWDs in Mayiendit County of Unity State have started to receive cash transfers from the Hope Restoration South Sudan (HRSS), a non-governmental organization, to facilitate their daily lives.
The donation, expected to reach at least 500 PWDs, started last week and will continue till the end of the week,
Thak Gai Bol, HRSS Protection Officer told Radio Tamazuj on Thursday in Mayiendit County that the cash transfers were introduced by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to support all PWDs in the seven counties of Unity State,
“We have supported the disabled to continue with their lives because they don’t have the power to do their activities. Many disabled people are suffering dropping out due to lack of service development funds and so many challenges are facing them,” Gai said.
He revealed that his organization is giving each individual a sum of SSP 48,000, an equivalent of USD 80 in Rukuach, Lual, and Tutnyang payams.
“We are giving them 48,000 SSP because those in the grassroots are facing some problems especially the people with disabilities have many more challenges than those in town,” he added.
He said the PWDs can buy personal effects with cash transfers and that it will only be for November and December.
Gattiek Reath is living with a disability in Mayiendit County. He said: “We can buy soap, clothes, and other items this Christmas.”
