Army chief inspects security in Western Lakes

The chief of South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF), Gen. Gabriel Jok Riak on Sunday visited Rumbek town of Western Lakes State to inspect the security situation there.

The army chief was leading a high-level security delegation comprising of Director-General of the Internal Security Bureau, Gen. Akol Koor, Inspector General of Police, Gen. Majak Akec Malok and Director of Military Intelligence, Gen. Rin Tueny Mabor.

Speaking to reporters in Rumbek town, the state governor Mahmoud Solomon said the visit by the top security team from Juba is aimed at assessing the security situation in Western Lakes State.

"One of the major challenges in Western Lakes State is the proliferation of firearms in the hands of civilians and this needs disarmament," he said.

Governor Mahmoud Solomon appealed to the national government to disarm civilians in the state.

Majak Akec Malok, the Inspector General of Police said they visited Rumbek town to inspect the security situation and the capacity of the organized forces.

The police boss said they will also visit other states to assess the security situation.

Last week, a soldier was shot and killed by unknown gunmen in Western Bahr Naam County of Western Lakes State.
