A traditional leader was shot dead by gunmen at his residence in Poktap town in Duk County, Jonglei State, on Monday, a local official said.

County Commissioner Peter Latjor Chuol told Tamazuj that Chief Mayen Ruac of Payuel was gunned down by assailants trying to steal cattle from his neighbor’s house on Monday morning.

“This local chief named Mayen had moved out of his house to ease himself when he spotted some armed men taking away cattle from a nearby house,” he explained. “When he intervened by asking who the men were, he was shot seven times and died on the spot.”

The local official condemned the attack as barbaric and said that no one has been arrested in connection with the incident. He blamed the attack on cattle raiders who want to rustle cattle from Poktap, an area that witnessed a deadly attack last month.

This latest attack and killing of a traditional leader comes barely weeks after another chief was killed in the county’s Gadiang area late last month.
