ACTED’s office was on Wednesday destroyed by angry residents living in the UN camp in Juba claiming the organization officials had stopped them from meeting the US Ambassador Nikki Haley during her recent visit to the camps in the capital.
ACTED’s programming focuses on expanding multi-sector approach on camp coordination and camp management, water and sanitation, and livelihoods in the camps.
Charles Riek Wal, chairman of the PoC3, told Radio Tamazuj today that the rioters broke into ACTED’s office inside the camp and destroyed it completed.
“The organization didn’t want the residents inside the camp to meet and welcome Nikki Haley. When people started to welcome the visitor with banners, the organization immediately evacuated her. The organization came and asked people why are wearing dirty clothes today, so the youth became angry and decided to vandalize the office,” Wal said.
ACTED’s project development manager, Ann Trisha, declined to comment on the matter.” I cannot make any comment on it currently. I said we are not making any statement on what happened in the last few days,” she said.
Meanwhile, the Centre for Peace and Justice (CPJ), a rights entity in South Sudan, has condemned the destruction of ACTED’s office inside the UN camp by protesters.
CPJ's coordinator Tito Anthony said in a statement on Thursday that the incident should be investigated saying violence is not a solution to any problem.
