Sudan’s Abyei Oversight Committee (AJOC) said a joint team from the US embassy in Khartoum and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) would visit the disputed territory of Abyei today.
In a press statement to the Sudanese Media Service (SMC) on Sunday, Saloma Yehya Musa, Executive Director of the Abyei Oversight Committee, said the visit aims to assess the humanitarian situation and needs of the local community, besides inspecting the development projects supported by the USAID.
The Sudanese official pointed out that the delegation comprises of 14 members from the American embassy in Khartoum, USAID and the oversight committee. He claimed that the security situation is calm in the region.
Sudan and South Sudan have not yet formed any joint administration in the disputed area.
In October 2013, the Ngok Dinka tribe conducted a unilateral popular referendum, in which the vast majority of people voted to join South Sudan. However, neither Sudan nor South Sudan recognized the plebiscite so far.
