South Sudan’s Ambassador to Egypt Anthony Kon warned that violent South Sudanese gangs have been implicated in at least 15 killings in Egypt and injured 40 people, according to a report he made to parliamentarians last week.
Kon urged the lawmakers to dispatch a high-level delegation for a fact-finding mission to the Egyptian capital. He pointed out that over 70 criminal cases involving South Sudanese citizens have been recorded at various police posts in Egypt.
“Those gangs are poor South Sudanese youths who are facing economic hardships after they refused to return back to South Sudan after independence in 2011,” he was quoted as saying.
The ambassador further said South Sudanese gangs attacked a Ugandan embassy official in Cairo.
He stressed that it was Egypt’s direct responsibility to protect South Sudan’s embassy under the 1963 Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.
